Web site bugsGoogle adsOn IE6 at work, there are 5-6 pixels of space between the right side of the skyscraper ad and the border surrounding it. I had problems with google ads in mozilla -> it turns out my 'minimal font size' was set too high. I set it to 9 or so; now google ads look fine - Tom e. LogoInternet explorer does not make the image background transparent. Maybe it can handle a .gif image better? I have to test. Also, the logo text should be different for the website and the wiki. Btw, the logo is not visible now... Design draft
The overall goal of the front page is to:
First I thought about just having these menu entries:
But also I think we will need a link to the ScreenShots page, and most likely there must be a link somewhere going back to Main/HomePage. Maybe this can be done by making the front page (Main/HomePage) be more like a "news" page with a paragraph or two about the latest changes, and have a News entry on top of the menu. Anyway, so few links is quite a radical change, so I'll leave the list of wiki links. Suggestion by tom e.: (still very under construction) I think editable and non-editable webpages don't need to be separated in the menu. The site visitor should find information sorted in content categories (about solfege - get started - get involved) in stead of techical categories (wiki - no wiki). The visitor will understand that not every page is open for editing. Tom E, the Faq and release notes are wiki pages now, and I think they should continue to be so. Main.Download, Main.Contribute, Main.Irc and Main.MailingLists are non-editable mostly for historical reasons. In fact, I think very few pages really has to be non-editable. At least as long as someone is looking after the pages every other day. TomCato (w) means editable in wiki
Etienne B. : The website is all in english... Could it be possible to access this site using other langages ? I think translating the front page and to have a reduced download page (with only the newest stable and maybe the newest development version ? so it would not be necessary to re-translate each time there is a new version ?) would be sufficient for users not familiar with english ? I think it could give solfege ever more visibility in the web. Good point. I'll see what I can do. I'm quite buzy, so it can take a few weeks.
Neilen Marais: The website seems very developer focussed. What users would no doubt like is a quick link to the user (not developer) documentation from the front page so they can get a feel for how the software works, and perhaps an extended feature list/explanatation. Good idea. I have added a link to the users manual.
